Is Bodycam peer-to-peer? How servers and hosts work, and how to tell if Bodycam is down
Bodycam doesn't use dedicated servers: matches are hosted by a player. What that means, how v0.8 host migration works, and what to do if you can't connect or think the servers are down.
Short answer: yes. Bodycam runs on peer-to-peer (P2P): there are no dedicated servers. Instead, one player acts as the host and everyone else connects to their match. That explains a lot: why it sometimes stutters, why whole matches used to drop, and why there's no official "server status" page.
What peer-to-peer means
- The host is just another player whose PC and connection keep the match running.
- If the host has a bad connection or a weak PC, everyone feels it: lag, stutter or desync.
- The rest of the system (Steam login, matchmaking and voice chat) still relies on online services. Voice chat was rebuilt in v0.8 on Epic Online Services.
Host migration (since v0.8)
Before Locked & Loaded, if the host left, the match dropped for everyone, and some did it on purpose to deny the result. With v0.8:
- A new host is picked based on ping.
- The match tries to resume from the last known state, within a margin of up to about 5 seconds.
- Positions, ammo, kills, dropped weapons and weather are preserved.
Patch v0.8 #6 fixed a bug where, after host migration, some matches ended up with more players than allowed, especially in 2v2 Wingman.
P2P risks: the host exploit
Being host gives control over the session. In September 2026 it was discovered that a host could crash other players' games by spawning hundreds of objects. Reissad fixed it in patch v0.8 #3, banned those who abused it and said it found no evidence of access to personal data. Anti-cheat is in development, tied to the party system's new connectivity layer.
Are Bodycam servers down?
Since players host the matches, the whole game rarely "goes down". What can fail:
- Steam (login, store or friends). If it fails, the game shows a login error.
- The game's online services (matchmaking or voice).
- A specific match, if the host has problems.
How to check:
- See our Bodycam status page: it shows players online right now according to Steam and which features are disabled. If there are thousands of players, the game works and the problem is on your end or with one match.
- Check the latest announcements in our Steam section.
- If it only happens to you, follow the errors and fixes guide.
Will it get dedicated servers?
The community has been asking since 2024 on the Steam forums, but Reissad hasn't announced dedicated servers. Its current approach is improving P2P: host migration, a new connectivity layer for parties and anti-cheat. Our take: for a one-time-purchase game with no active microtransactions, dedicated servers would be a big cost for a studio its size.
